It’s really coincidental that Shannon decided to have May’s themed Works For Me Wednesday on birthdays, especially since Ava’s is tomorrow. Here are a few ideas from my childhood of ways to make birthdays special:
- A special plate only for use on birthdays or other major accomplishments (graduations, new jobs, etc)
- Birthday child gets to pick all of the meals–They get their favorite breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert for their special day.
- Family only parties every other year, and larger parties with friends, favors, etc on the years in between. It’s nice to celebrate birthdays in a small group with just the family, especially on years that other major events happen (getting baptized at 8, turning 12 and going into YW/YM, etc). I find it also cuts costs of expensive favors and themed parties with numerous children and their accompanying parents. Sometimes these family-only parties took place at our favorite places: San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, New York’s Times Square, etc.
- Often we couldn’t afford much on birthdays, but we always had a special day with one of our parents. They just spent the day with us doing things we love (going to the park, etc). We often had time alone with the parents, but this was just another excuse for it.
