I always like learning new words. I was reading a news report from Reuters India on the current crisis between Hezbollah and Israel (something I do not want to get into here on this blog). I read the following passage:
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora said he would not hold negotiations before a ceasefire, scuppering Rice’s visit
Scuppering. What the heck is that? So I looked it up. To scupper means:
Nautical. An opening in the side of a ship at deck level to allow water to run off.
An opening for draining off water, as from a floor or the roof of a building.
Chiefly British. To overwhelm or massacre.
To ruin or destroy: “The world oil glut combined with disastrous federal energy policies to scupper Alberta’s economy” (Christian Science Monitor).
What a cool word!
