B&N. . . with kids

B&N. . . with kids

This past weekend, our family and my sister’s family had planned on making the trip down to Washington, DC to go to the temple. It’s been much too long since Dan & I have been there, and Jess & Joe were going for the first time since he was baptized last year. So exciting!

So we get to the church at 5:30am, all prepared to go—to find out that the bus doesn’t have seatbelts. How in the world could she take Nathaniel (a flailing 18 months)? How would I deal with Ava on the turns? We decided it was best that we not take the youngest kids, so Dan & I volunteered to stay home for Ava & Nathaniel.

By about 1 pm, we were getting cabin fever, so we throw the kids in the car and go to do some Christmas shopping. Toys R Us wasn’t bad–Dan & I both grabbed carts and strapped each kid in. Pier One wasn’t bad either.

Then we get to B&N. Years ago, I would spend days sitting in the overstuffed chairs, perusing books. Today would be vastly different. Read the rest of this entry

Gratitude and Thanksgiving

Gratitude and Thanksgiving

We had a delightful dinner on Thursday at my mother’s new digs. She had a large home, but being that she’s single once again, it was much more practical to move into an apartment that required little maintenance. I’ll admit I was a little concerned how we’d fit 2 men, 3 women, and 3 kids in her little place, but it was wonderful. The decor is great and it was a nice meal.

As I’ve been thinking about gratitude, this weekend especially, I realize that I have so many blessings. Dan & I have truly been richly blessed. We have our family. It’s eternal, it’s wonderful and it’s ours. We have Ava, who is so darling, even when she wakes up 5+ times a night.  We have the gospel of Jesus Christ in our lives. That in and of itself is such a huge blessing. Lastly, as was pointed out in sacrament meeting last week, we are richer than 90% of the world as we have a roof over our head, clothes on our backs, food in the cabinets, and some money in the bank. When you think about it in those terms, it’s shameful to complain about anything.

Friday’s Favorite

Friday’s Favorite

Here’s another great one from the 80s. I don’t know why I didn’t get into the Talking Heads back then. I think I was put off by their songs “Once In A Lifetime” and “Burning Down The House.” Too quirky for my tastes back then. I’m loving them now though. Here is Talking Heads and “Road to Nowhere.”

Lyrics:

Well we know where were goin
But we dont know where weve been
And we know what were knowin
But we cant say what weve seen
And were not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out

Were on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin that ride to nowhere
Well take that ride

Im feelin okay this mornin
And you know,
Were on the road to paradise
Here we go, here we go

Chorus

Maybe you wonder where you are
I dont care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there…take you there

Were on a road to nowhere
Were on a road to nowhere
Were on a road to nowhere

Theres a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And its all right, baby, its all right

And its very far away
But its growing day by day
And its all right, baby, its all right

They can tell you what to do
But theyll make a fool of you
And its all right, baby, its all right

Were on a road to nowhere

On CHMOD

On CHMOD

I’ve written a post on chmod in my librarian/webdesign blog, that I wanted to share with our larger readership. I don’t know about any of you, but I’ve had a hard time with the learning curve on computer programming and scripting language. I’ve discovered an easier way to understand chmod, and I’ve written it on the other blog. This is for Mac’s OS X only, though I’m sure Windows XP is not that different.
