The Flood of 2006
So the rain and floodwaters came, and they are starting to leave. The damage is devastating for many people. Some homes have water up to the middle of their first floor. The creeks and river were quite poweful, even tearing up blacktopping on some roads. Hopefully the homeowners can recover quickly.
I wonder though– we are the only major town on the Susquehanna that does not have levees or other forms of flood protection. Why is that? What is preventing this town from taking action to preserve homes? Major floods have been occurring nearly every other year for the past 10. Why would we continue to subject 25% of this town to that destruction? I’ll never understand the priorities of some politicians.
I am quite glad that my family and friends are all safe and sound. Please pray for those who were flooded. They’ll need it.
The Flooding in Videos
I’ve uploaded a video on YouTube,
which shows the waters rising. It’s amazing to see how nothing can really stop this water if it wants to rise.
And this one is right next to the Susquehanna earlier in the day that shows how much the river has flooded.
Can’t Go Any Further
This was at 7am on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 right next to the Susquehanna River. This is the road to the park, which went under first
The Morning After
The waters are moving back, but not before they got a good number of homes here in Bloomsburg.
The Bridge Over the River Susquehanna
There isn’t much of a visible difference from the previous picture. It does not look like the river will overtake the bridge. According to someone iiving right close to the bridge, the water’s level will only increase by another five feet.
Welcome to Bloomsburg, the Only TOWN in Pennsylvania
but not the only town in Pennsylvania experiencing this kind of water.
Moving Out Quick Enough?
These guys started this morning under dry ground. The kids in the earlier picture right at the edge of the water were on the other side of the U-Haul. In less than 2 hours the U-Haul is in water.

The Water Slowly but Steadily Creeps Ever Closer
I showed these kids just how quickly that water was moving. Looking at it from a distance does not show you the quick move. I put my finger down on one spot and let them watch as the water steadily moved towards covering my finger.
